First year as a mech girl ( hem... the only mech girl) was as normal as could be expected.
THE TITLE
The custom of calling the only girl in mech 'Mechrani' was a cause of intense embarrassment to me initially because even seniors would identify me and once the do - the title would inevitably be heard. Much was the amusement of my fellow inmates at the LH to give me the title and see me fume. But frustration gave way to reluctant acceptance as I realized that as G3 was mechrani I too would be - till the end of my days at NITC.
WORKSHOP
I enjoyed the mech workshop sessions in immensely in the first semester. I had always looked upon the tools used by various workmen with a desire to handle them and see for myself if those jobs were really as easy as they looked. Mech WS was the fulfillment of that dream and it was pleasant to find that I could do the tasks as well as any boy in my class even though a bit slower. The general modus operandi of girls in mech WS was to look extremely helpless ( translates to feminine for many) until some lab assistant/M.Tech took pity on them. Another practice in vogue was to compare the wear and tear on our hands after carpentry/filing. The faculty in charge of workshop especially Ramachandran Sir were extremely friendly. Sir would come and stand nearby as we worked and crack jokes at the mistakes we made while offering helpful tips. Sitting around after completing lab and comparing our record marks ( it was our first record and was done very conscientiously), waiting for our friends to complete, drinking water from the cooler, rolling up the overlarge sleeves of lab-coats( before we got them adjusted)...what fun.
MECHANICS AND GRAPHICS
The much hyped Goliaths of S1...supposedly deadly and in case of graphics-potentially lethal... I liked both and fared pretty well. I liked mechanics as a subject but being prone to calculation mistakes it was a stumbling block in S2. Both semester classes were taken by Jayadeep sir and were extremely good. He would spend a lot of time explaining everything all over again if we did not grasp a point. The clashes between him and a long haired repeater who consistently came late(Sir always came 5 mins early) were a source of entertainment to the rest of us especially in the monday afternoon slot.
Graphics was handled by George.K.Varghese sir for the F batch. He took great pains at helping us visualize what we were drawing- bringing models to class and using a two-files-tied-together prop to show the horizontal and vertical planes.I was reasonably good at the imagination part but my drawing speed was(still is) pitiable. So my end sem paper had all accurate rough sketches but the drawing sheet was one figure short.
